The following article will try to demonstrate that aquarium maintenance can be quite easy.
Go on the Internet to find information aquarium maintenance and you'll find that a good maintenance should be done weekly or at less twice a month.
I take care of over 25 tanks so there is no way I am gonna spend even half an hour on each tank every week or two. I actually clean them once a month. That's not much but my tanks always look clean, no algae problem, no pollution.
To do this I use a really strong filtration system. Forget about those filters you see in pet-shop. They are not bad but the filtration media what comes with can't do the job right. With some real good filtration media, your filter could do a much better job.
What’s a really good filtration media?
The largest the surface area in contact with water is, the better it is. More surface area allow more bacteria to establish on it. The more bacteria you have the stronger your nitrogen cycle is. Does it make sense?
Which filtration media should we use?
1) Bio Ball's surface area is 100 cubic feet for every cubic foot of material.
2) Lava Rock's surface area is approximately 315 meters squared per gram.
3) Silica Sand is approximately 390 meters squared per gram.
4) Aquarium activated Carbon is approximately 650 meters squared per gram.
5) Tri Base Pelletized Carbon is approximately 1,150 meters squared per gram. It also contains an available carbon source for the bacteria.
So I chosed Tri Base Pelletized carbon because it has much more surface area for bacteria growth. I’ll explain the available carbon source a little later.
According to Hiatt Distributor (who supply that carbon), there is two way we can use the Tri Base Pelletized Carbon: As a bacteria bed (this is what I use it for) or for chemical filtration.
Tri base Pelletized Carbon : As a bacteria bed
Here we do not use Tri Base Pelletized Carbon as a chemical reducer but as a bacteria bed. When used this way it has a 4 year life time and it will not release any chemical once it got old. Why should I use anything else when that carbon can hold 10 time more bacteria per gram?
A good bacteria bed is important. I use a bacteria call Right Now Bacteria. Interesting name don't you think!
The reason why it’s call Right Now Bacteria is because it develop so fast that Tri Base Pelletized Carbon gets totally colonized within only a few hours. At 25C, 0.1 gram of Right Now Bacteria will constitute a colony at a population density of 867 x 10 8 organisms in eight hours. I have been trying to get some information about other kinds of bacteria starters but they never reply my emails.
Because Tri Base Pelletized Carbon contains an available carbon source, it allow Right Now Bacteria to complete the nitrogen cycle and reduce Nitrates into Nitrogen gas.
Conclusion
When used together, Right Now Bacteria and Tri Base Pelletized Carbon drastically reduce No3 and Po4 which reduce the need for water change. The bacteria only need to be used once.
My little 15 gallon tank has zero No3 and Po4 after a month without water change. All I do is to rinse the carbon once a month. While I do this, also change 2 to 3 gallons of water. How could it be more easy.
I invite everyone who are curious about this to give it a try with a small 5 or 10 gallon tank and see the results with your own eyes. The amount of carbon and bacteria needed is really small so you won’t spend much. A complete (and really easy) protocol and set-up instruction is available at here.

overpopulated aquarium
Note: information on this article are good for both fresh and salt water aquarium
If you add to much fish in your tank, pollution will soon build up and problems are to happen. Also, it happen to many aquarist who do not get info about there new fish to simply have fish that grow to big for there tank. Once again, pollution level will build up and maintenance becomes a nightmare.
I personally always make sure to only keep a small amount of small fish in my tanks but as an aquarium maintenance business owner, I always come across heavy maintenance tank that simply contain to much fish.
Let me share with you how I manage to keep overpopulated fish tanks clean and healthy without doing weekly water change.
First of all, any aquarium, lakes and ponds needs a way to eliminate pollution produce by fish and other inhabitant. Your aquarium really on your filter, plants and live rock (for reef tank) to eliminate this pollution. Because most of the time this is not enough, we do water changes. If pollution build up to fast, larger or more frequent water changes are needed and this is where aquarium maintenance becomes time consuming.
There is no way clients will accept to pay me to service there tanks more than once a week so I had to figure out how to obtain results with limited maintenance. The way I proceed to only service these tanks twice or once a month is to make sure that filtration is strong enough to eleminate all that crap for me. The filtration system I’ll show you is so strong that bacteria in it consume complete the azote cycle and eliminate No3 and Po4. Yes that’s right!
Bacteria in your filter has the following limiting factors :
1. The amount of available food.
2. The amount of accessible oxygen.
3. The total surface platforms to form colonies.
4. Water temperature; and
5. pH range.
The Solution:
Here on plant Earth, in any ecosystem, if the inhabitants are to survive, the Nitrogen Cycle must be established and the poisonous nitrogen compounds brought down to tolerable levels.
Ensure minimum limitation for bacteria life grow and you'll get a nitrogen cycle able to do the job. With a real good filtration system, you could easily have a pollution reading close to 0 without doing all that maintenance and these water changes.
How to do this :
1-you need a really large bacteria bed (platforms to form the colonies). There is two ways to do this : you first option is to have a super large filter and the second is to use a media that has a really large surface area in contact with water. As a bacteria bed, I use an activated carbon call Tri Base Pelletized Carbon. It has a surface area in contact with water up to 10X larger than most filtration media on the market. Plus, it has available carbon. When use as a bacteria bed (and not as a chemical reducer), Tri Base Pelletized Carbon have a 4 years life time!
2- I do not wait anymore for cycling. I use a bacteria call Right Now Bacteria. This bacteria grow really fast and will establish on the carbon within only a few hours. It also resist to copper and can survive within a large temperature range. It contains many different organism that work all together at different level. What’s great about it is that I only need to use it once to get long lasting results.
Here is a graph showing results in a small reef tank

As you see, results are great and what’s great is that it work for all tanks.
By the way, I still do water changes once in a while but much less and much smaller. My main task is to rince the carbon in the filter once a month.
An other great thing about this bacteria combined with Tri Base Pelletized Carbon is that bacteria grow fast enough to cycle the tank within 24h only! I never lost a fish doing this. I have made water testing every hours many time and it always showed good water for healty fish.
It’s realy cheap to get a filtration system like this. Yes, Tri Base Pelletized Carbon is certainly more expensive than any other activated carbon but with a 4 years life, it pay for it self quickly.
If you want to give this a try, there is a simple but really important protocol to follow. A good version of this protocol is available at Mad Captain’s Aquarium.
On this site, you will notice that they propose you many other goods to run this system. Some are water conditioners, some are made to provide ph and or trace elements. Note that you do not need this to run the system. You can easily hang on your good old way to maintain ph and elements. What’s important is the bacteria and the bacteria bed.
I use these other goods for tanks that I really have no time to take care of. The pH adjustment rock are great because they hold pH in salt water tanks and last certainly over 10 years. The only problem with it is that it can take some time and tune-up before it is totally stable so it could be risky if install on an old reef tank containing fancy corals. When it’s a new tank, I do use it because I have all my time and can make adjustment without risk.
Trace Elements block are one of the goods I use in all salt water tanks (not fresh water) running with that filtration system. The reason I use these block is because they supply trace elements and all magnesium I need. The carbon has the inconvenient to remove these trace elements so we need constant supply. What I like about it is that I do not need to dose. I simply add one block and an other one when the first one has dissolved. On fresh water tanks, these extra goods are not needed.
So if you find aquarium maintenance time consuming or allays pollution problems I invite you to give this method a try. It work for me and will work for you for sure.

Reef tank at low cost
A complete reef tank for $284.00
A complete reef tank for $284.00
According to many, to have a reef tank can be expensive. This article will show you that it is possible to setup a fish only salt water aquarium of a reef tank without breaking your bank.
Yes, it does not have to cost that much and once setup, it does not need to need heavy maintenance. All it need is to be setup properly.
Budget for a 15 gallon reef tank : -An old fluval 304 canister (look on ebay or on a forum for great price) -1.7 lbs of Tri Base Pelletized Carbon (about $18.00) -10.5 lbs of ph adjustment rock (about $60.00) -1/2lbs of Sea Lab Trace Element bloc #28 (about $15.00) -8oz of Metal Gone Salt Water (about $20.00) -1 bottle of Chloradsorb (about $35.00) -1 dose of Right Now Bacteria for 25 gallon (about $6.00) -A 15 gallon tank (about $30.00) -5lbs of Live Rock (about $30.00) -Salt (about 50.00 for the year) -1 fish (about $20.00)
Total : $284.00
I did not mention the lamp in all this because depending on what you want, it can cost you from $50.00 to over $350.00. If what you want is to grow sort corals, a good old (and cheap) power compact light will do the job but if hard corals are what you want, maybe you should think about a Metal Halide or any other equivalent.
So, for only $214.00 you have everything you need to setup a small reef tank. What’s great about this is that it will only cost you about $70.00 to $100.00 per other years.
If you want to cut the cost a little, you can try to find some Live Rock on a forum (sometime people have some to give away).
Is it still that expensive?
Here is how to set-up the tank : 1- Rinse the carbon and put it in a bucket with water and an air pump to give o2 to the carbon. Live it in that bucket for a good 3 to 4 days.
2- Open your fluval and remove everything in it. All you need is the canister (and the pump in it).
3- 3-After 3 to 4 days, add the carbon, ph adjustment rock and about 1 oz of Metal gone to the canister.
4- Hook the canister to your tank and make sure to place the return pipe 2 inches above the water surface.
5- Mix salt to water
6- Plug your filter
You now have a tank with only water an a filter.
7- Place you live rock in your tank
8- Add one nugget of sea lab trace element block in your tank
Your tank is now ready to go! It’s now time to start the tank.
9- Acclimate your fish
10-Five (5) minutes before you add your fish, add Right Now Bacteria
10-The first 24 hours the tank will cloud up. By the next day you will have the entire TOTALLY AEROBIC NITROGEN and PHOSPHORUS CYCLE! Also, for the next month (let’s say years)
Now you might wonder what are that Right Now Bacteria and all other supply involved in this set-up. For that, I invite you to visit Mad Captain’s Aquarium where you can get all the supply and find all the answer you need about this system and some more info about the protocol to follow.

Remove No3 and Po4
with Right Now Bacteria filtration system
Over the last years I was dreaming of a project : to open my own aquarium maintenance business. I was thinking that the fact I enjoyed playing with my 6 tanks was enough to believe that it would be great and enjoyable to make a job of it.
After only a year in business, I realized how wrong I was! Some set-up people want you to maintain makes no sense. Some want you to do miracle with only monthly water change or want you to make that « dirty swamp » a nice aquatic eye catcher in there living room but will not want to admit that the cause of there bad success is those 3 large oscars in that little 25 gallon tank or the total unstability and high pollution level in there reef tank. When they are told that many things will have to change to be successful, most dont agree or will simply say that what’s needed for there reef tank cost a little more than they expected (and I understan). So to not loose that business opportunity you simply say « well…. I’ll se what I can do with that ». When all you can do is to clean the glass and do bi- bimonthly water change in a reef tanks that build over 100ppm of No3 in a month, there is no way you can see results.
So I start looking for something or somehow to make all this possible. I tried many things without success and one day, I finally found on a forum a post about what’s call Right Now Bacteria. According to the info I found, when your tank and filter are set-up following a certain protocol, Right Now Bacteria would drastically reduce NO3, PO4, sludge, ammonia and would even maintain my ph and alkalinity if I adapt it for salt water. Also, what surprised me the most was that this product clams to establish aerobicaly a complete cycle in no more than 24h.
Like many who stop to belive in magical product and Santa Claus, I was a little suspicious about all this so I tried to find more info about it. After having read many review I realized one think : those who said it don’t work are those who did not tried it (probably people like me who don’t belive in magic). Those who tried and followed the protocol were only saying good things about it. So I decided to give it a tried, called the manufacture, set up an account and ordered enough of that filtration system to set-up a few tank.
Only a week after my first try, I start believing in this a little more. Everything went good in my new 50 gallon planted tank. No ammonia pick, no death fish, no visible sign of problem. Same thing with my good old (not that old) nano reef tank. That was a well establish tank so in that case, I was more interested in that No3 and PO4 reduction thing. In less than one day, all those went from 5-10 ppm (I forgot about water changes the month before) to nothing more than 0!
After these great results, I tried it in many other tanks; old, new, fresh water, salt water. It worked every time! I still don’t belive in Santa Claus and magical stuff but I now belive in this system!
I even realized how easy to maintain my little 15 gallon reef tank became. I do not have to worry about PH and alkalinity any more, pollution level is undetectable with my test kit, I do not have to use RO water any more, I simply have to add some mineral using some trace element block that dissolve slowly in my tank and my weekly maintenance routine became a monthly maintenance routine. Actualy, those trace element block and some magnesium are the only additive I need to use on a regular basis. Far more enjoyable than the time I had to use ph buffer, alkalinity buffer, RO water, do regular water change and worry about pollution level. By the way, it’s also the same story with my fresh water tank (actually, it’s easier with those tanks)
So what do you think I did? I installed the system (at my fee) in the tanks I have to maintain for living. Not in all tanks… only in those that were impossible to maintain properly. At home, all my tanks run on that system but I can’t afford to pay a new filtration system to everyone in town (I wish I could). Let me tell you this has great effect on my job. Instead of just cleaning tanks, I can now say I maintain and improve tanks.
If you are curious about all this and want to give it a try, go at Mad Captain's Aquarium to find every thing you need. Don’t forget to follow the complete protocol and to set up your tank properly (if not it simply dont work). If you have a fresh water tank, you’ll probably find that this filtration system is a little more expensive than others but there is way to cut the price : if your tank is not to big and you can get an old canister filter you might not need to pay for the special canister sold for this. Also, the filtration media (tri base pelletized carbon) involve in this system cost more than any other activated carbon I have seen but will last over 4 years. If your tank is a salt water tank, for sure, this system do not cost more than the filtration systems we usually use and because you need less additive, it pay for it self quickly.
